ILL Spading Requests

ILL Requests for the purposes of spading and source collection should be made:

  • For material that the library does not own (be sure to check the LEAGLE catalog first)
  • When it is for a book that the law library owns but is unavailable (checked out, missing, lost, etc.)

Before making a request

Spaders, look HERE!

First check the LEAGLE catalog to see if the material is readily available or accessible through the Law Library or our consortial holdings

LEAGLE Catalog

  • Please note that you have access to a variety of materials through the University Library and our partners in the WRLC consortium
  • More information on searching the catalog is available here: https://wcl.american.libguides.com/catalog

DO NOT make multiple requests of the same title!

  • Check with your line editor or other journal staffers to ensure that they have not already made a request of the same material
  • Your publication should maintain a shared document with information on the sources that you need for spading
  • If there are many requests for different pages in the same book or journal then you should consider coordinating with other staffers to make a physical item requests

Please use the ILL Spading Request live form located on this page or at https://wcl-american.libwizard.com/f/ILL_requests to make your ILL request

Placing an ILL Request

ALL ILL requests for spading and source collection for WCL student publications (briefs and journals) MUST use the ILL Spading Request Form on this page

Each journal should designate a single staffer to make ILL requests for each article that is being spaded. The law library will not fulfill requests made by multiple staffers for the same material

Physical Item vs. Copy Requests

When should I make a copy request?

  • If you need a small portion of a book -- less than 50 pages; no more than 1 chapter or 10% of a book
  • If you need one article from a single issue of a journal

When should I make a physical item request?

  • If you are uncertain as to exactly what pages you need from a book
  • If you need a substantial portion of a book -- more than 50 pages; more than 1 chapter or 10% of a book

Remember to coordinate with your colleagues on the journal to coordinate loan requests, another spader might need the same item.

Library Guidelines

  • Copyright guidelines allow copying of 1 chapter or 10 percent of a book (whichever is less) of print material
    • Most libraries will not scan more than 50 pages of any print material
    • Requests outside of these guidelines will be converted to physical loan requests
  • Requests for the "full introduction and conclusion" or similar blanket requests will not be honored
    • This is an antiquated spading requirement and often violates copyright
    • Consider using tools like Google Scholar or book reviews if you need to garner information about the content of the book
  • Requests for "10 pages before and after" your pin cite will also not be honored
    • You may request a page or two before and after the pin cite
    • If you need many pages from a book consider placing a physical loan request
  • Requests for tables of contents for articles or copies of the covers of law journals will not be honored
