AUWCL Orientation 2023

Welcome to AUWCL! All orientation information is available on this site.

All sessions will take place in NT01 and attendance is required at all evening sessions. Dinner will be provided outside NT01 beginning at 5:30pm each day.

IMBY is a celebration of everything good in our community and a chance to be part of positive work being done at various organizations all over the District. IMBY sets the tone for the spirit of public service and community involvement that pervades at AUWCL. For 1Ls, IMBY is a fun way to kick off orientation, get out and see the city, and meet new classmates in a relaxed environment.

Required Check-in and Orientation Packet/AU ID Pickup

Welcome to AUWCL! Please arrive early to Orientation to check in, pick up your name tag and Orientation packet, and AU ID. We’ll start distributing materials at 5:00pm in the WCL Commons on the Terrace Level between the Warren and Yuma buildings. We encourage you to arrive early to start connecting with classmates and the WCL community members assisting with Orientation week. 

Dean's Welcome & Professional Oath

Dean Roger A. Fairfax, Jr. will welcome the incoming class to the American University Washington College of Law.

Magistrate Judge Katherine Wiedmann (AUWCL '01), Superior Court of the District of Columbia will administer the Professional Oath to the incoming part-time class.

Growing into a Lawyer:
Professional Identity Formation

Lawyers enjoy satisfying, rewarding careers when they dedicate themselves to work opportunities that align their interests with the skills valued by employers, clients, and the profession. By the end of this session, students will be able to contextualize law school in this regard as they begin forming their professional identity.

Learning the Law: Reading and Briefing Cases
 “Thinking like a lawyer” starts with learning the law. That requires purposeful reading and methodical information management. By the end of this session, students will understand useful critical reading techniques and the process of case briefing.
