The George Floyd Protests – Related Trials and Commentary: Background

A guide to news, analysis, and court documents on the killing of George Floyd and subsequent trial of police officer Derek Chauvin

Introduction

George Floyd, a Black man, died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25, 2020. Officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on Floyd's neck for approximately nine minutes immediately prior to Floyd's death. Floyd's death sparked months of protests across the country against racism and police mistreatment of Black people. Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. Chauvin's trial began on March 8, 2021.
