Black History Month: Resources

Electronic resources promoted by Pence Law Library in observance of Black History Month.

Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States that runs during the month of February. The observance was recognized as a federal event in 1976 and aims celebrates African-American and African diaspora history. The federal Black History Month had various precursors throughout the 20th century. Upon it's recognition, U.S. President Gerald Ford called for Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." The event provides an opportunity to celebrate Black historical figures and their contributions to American society. Black History Month also provides an opportunity to re-evaluate curriculum, educational resources, and historical narratives to include Black voices.
